“In the shifting tactics of white supremacy and privilege, Blue Lives Matter is the new All Lives Matter, an attempt to change the subject away from the violence against Black people by agents of the state, and hope that Black people and their problems simply go away. The hypocrisy is palpable.”
Blue Lives Matter is a diversionary tactic that supports a coded white supremacist order. Formerly, All Lives Matter was used to derail the conversation about race. The Republican National Convention emphasized law and order without addressing the needs of black people. Milwaukee’s Sheriff David Clarke, Jr., who is black, spoke. He has been denouncing black lives matter while calling for more leniency in police prosecution. Blue Lives Matter laws have already made their way into Louisiana, Florida, Wisconsin and Kentucky. As CNN’s Arjun Sethi noted, these privileges should favor marginalized communities. Blue Lives Matter Laws assume police are in eminent danger, while ignoring the danger that exists in communities of color. Also, people choose to be police officers, but they don’t choose to be black. Police have got away with killing black people for too long, and to dismiss that with “all lives matter” shows an ignorance of what black Americans face daily. Black lives face discrimination while blue lives are shielded. Blue Lives Matter is nothing but a vehicle for racism. People hear Blue Lives Matter and use that to justify the killing of black men. If people truly believed All Lives Matter they would join in the outrage following the police killing of black men – or white men, or black women or whomever. Instead it is just a blind following of authority that, in their eyes, can do no wrong.
